Here's a step-by-step account of the command line fix you can make by booting into "single user
mode." The fix is written from an Ubuntu perspective, but applies to most any Linux system that
boots with the GRUB manager. It's also a reminder that even a password-protected Linux box isn't
truly protected from the curious, so encrypt your data.

A the recent LinuxWord conference, Ars got the chance to test drive a mobile Linux platform that has
developers talking: the ACCESS Linux Platform. We also spent some quality time with the SDK, and had
a chat with the folks at ACCESS.

The long rumored, long awaited "Eee PC Killer" from Dell, now called the Dell Inspiron Mini 9, is
now shipping! The Windows XP version, available now, costs $399. The Ubuntu Linux version, available
in "a few weeks," will cost just $349! These prices are actually much lower than ASUS's for
comparable systems.

Sure, Windows is expected to run on 1 billion devices by 2010. But a loud minority is making its
voice heard by moving to Ubuntu Linux. In fact, Canonical’s marketing materials state that Ubuntu
now has more than 8 million users.

Today the GNU project celebrates its quarter-century. It was on 27 September 1983 that MIT slacker
Richard M Stallman made his announcement that he intended to create a complete Unix-like system that
would be completely open and hackable, giving anyone the right to modify and distribute the work.

What has happened is a clear evolution of a community that has grown up and produced intelligent,
cutting-edge technologies with an eye on making computing faster, smarter and cheaper for corporate
users. Companies like Openmoko are challenging the mobile device market with its notion that users
should control what applications are installed.

Sick of burning CDs of Linux distributions every time you want to try out a new one? Don’t worry,
you can reuse your USB stick as many times as you like and burn bootable ISOs to it. Is there an
easy way to do this? Yes.

Last year, curious over the hype that was flooding the internet in the wake of the release of
Windows Vista, I decided to turn masochist and inflict a 14-day Vista trial on myself. I found the
operating system much worse than even its worst critic.

This is a circular-application-menu (C-A-M) prototype mirroring the same structure as the existing
application menu for the GNOME desktop. This was originally just a paper prototype which I did back
in March 2007, and decided to code over Christmas 2007-2008.
